Stewarding Skin: Whipped Shea Body Butter Recipe

Whipped body butter has been life changing for me. Last year I noticed I dealt with a lot of dry skin, flaky skin, and eczema like skin rashes. The store-bought lotions did not cut it for me, I knew I needed to do something different to steward my skin better. Since I started making body butter at home, I have noticed a big improvement in my skin and hair. My skin stays hydrated longer; the butters support my natural skin barrier by holding in moisture to prevent water loss. Because of this the dryness subsided, flakiness is gone, and the eczema like rashes disappeared. For my hair, the butter softens my strands, tames frizz, and adds natural shine. My natural curls are much more defined, and my twist outs last 2-3 weeks now.
Shea Butter provides long-lasting, deep hydration for the skin and hair. It is rich in vitamins and antioxidants which makes it perfect in managing dry, rough patches on the skin. It helps to protect the natural skin barrier which in turn improves skin texture by softening it, reducing inflammation, and enhancing elasticity. Shea butter can help soothe skin irritation like eczema, stretch marks, scars, stretch, rashes, or other concerns.
Coconut Oil is amazing for skin and hair health! Coconut oil is a deep moisturizer, that strengthens the skin barrier and provides antimicrobial protection. Castor oil has made waves across traditional medicine for many centuries for its ability to help with everything from skin repair to liver detoxification. This thick, plant-based oil is rich in fatty acids, flavonoids, and antioxidants. There is no limit to what castor oil can do for skin health and overall health.

Ingredients
- 158 grams shea butter
- 20 grams coconut oil
- 44 grams of desired carrier oils
- 7 grams arrowroot powder (cuts the greasiness)
- 15 drops lavender essential oil
- 15 drops eucalyptus essential oil (optional)
Instructions
- 1Set a heatproof bowl over top of a small pot of simmering hot water.
- 2Add the shea butter and coconut oil into the bowl.
- 3Allow the shea butter and coconut oil to melt slowly over the heat, stirring occasionally, until it is mostly liquid.
- 4Turn off the stove. Allow it to cool for 3-5 minutes, then add in your carrier oils and essential oils. Stir gently.
- 5Take the bowl from off the pot, put it in the fridge for 1 hour until the top layer has softly solidified.
- 6Remove from the fridge. Add in the arrowroot powder.
- 7Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip it for 15 - 30 minutes until the texture of the body butter is light, creamy, soft, and airy. Your body butter is now complete.
- 8Transfer it to your desired airtight glass jar or plastic container. If the opening to your container is small, transfer the body butter to a ziplock bag and cut a small hole in the bottom corner of the bag. Now, squeeze out your body butter into your container.
Notes
- Keeps for 6 - 12 months in a cool, dark, and dry place. If it melts, re-chill and re-whip it.
- A little goes a very long way — start with a pea-sized amount. Best applied on moist skin.
